THORNBURY CEMETERY

MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS

The Monumental Inscriptions included on this website were transcribed by Chris & Sandra Doig at the suggestion of the Thornbury & District Museum Research Group.  Photographs have been added to provide a historical record of how the graves in Thornbury Cemetery appeared in 2006.

We apologise for any omissions or errors made in transcribing the inscriptions.  In our defence they are sometimes difficult to read.  Many of the gravestones, particularly those in the Old Church Section, have suffered from the ravages of age and weather.  In some cases the whole front face of the gravestone has come away and fallen off.

If you have any corrections, please contact us.  We are happy to sort out our mistakes.  If you are looking for something that we have not yet transcribed, please contact the staff at Thornbury Town Council.  They have a full record of Thornbury  cemetery and will be able to help relatives find a grave.

Thornbury Cemetery is located just outside Thornbury on the road to Kington.  It was opened in 1892 and the Town Council now manage it in 5 discrete sections:

Old Church (OC), New Church (NC), Non Conformist (Non Con), Roman Catholic (RC), and Extension (Ext)

We have transcribed the inscriptions from the Old Church Section (the graves to the left of the chapel) and the graves in the oldest blocks of the Non-Conformist and New Church Sections (the graves in the area to the right of the chapel up to the footpath which goes down to caretaker's hut).

In certain cases, you will see links to our other website which shows the history of the row of houses once known as Laburnum Terrace, and now known as Numbers 8 - 22 Gloucester Road.  These links appear where an inscription relates to an individual who lived in the terrace and takes you directly to the appropriate page within the website.
